On the evening of the 24th April, I attended my first ACT Cultures Crossing event hosted by Marysia Zipser at the Bennetts Bar Hotel and Restaurant in Long Eaton.

Being located at such a large venue, I was amazed at how beautifully set out it was - in such a way that made this grand hotel seem like a small, personal setting.

#ACTCC8 @Bennetts LongEaton.
On April 24 Cultures Crossing 8 came to Long Eaton in Derbyshire and brought colourful fireworks of artistic talent. Cozy and inviting Bennetts Hotel/Bar welcomed local and international performers from Beeston and Nottingham.

The evening was filled with music, stories, and exploration of world culture. From African rhythmic drumming and poetry to Cuban energetic dancing, from Bollywood violin vibrant tunes to Venetian technique inspired mask making, to Mexican folk story telling - all these incredible talents gathered under one roof to amaze the audience.

The first artist of the night was beautiful violinist Ursula Al-Mishari. She filled the room with sound of Bollywood - Middle Eastern inspired style music, which was so refreshing and quite different from what one would expect from ordinary violin performance!

Next was Stephen Jon, fascinating mask performer and mask maker. He not only entertained guests with his extraordinary characters but also shared different techniques and approaches to the time consuming and rather complicated process of mask making.

Two amazing ladies, Victoria Mponda (from Malawi) and Florette Fetgo (from Cameroon) brought a taste of African culture and mesmerised their audience with African drumming while reading poetry, two things I never thought could go so gracefully together!

When I thought that the evening could not get any more interesting, an amazing story teller Tim Ralphs came in front of the crowd to share a Mexican folk tale. His style and stage presence captivated everyone at once. Tim’s choice of the tale was fun and taught us an important lesson - wives are much smarter than husbands!!!

The last performance of the night was by Idalberto Alcada-Rodriguez, who danced from his heart and shared his love for Cuba by means of music and movement! He surprised everyone with his skilful machete performance integrated into graceful dance! In the end Idalberto gave a dance lesson which was not only for guests of the event, but even the Bennetts’ employees could not resist and got involved! People were fully enjoying themselves, dancing to the Cuban upbeat tune, some even got out of breath as the result.

The entire evening was a very successful cultural submersion full of electrifying performances!

Cultures Crossing 7 @Minor Oak Coworking, Sneinton Market
Sneinton market is known as the artist/artisan headquarters of Nottingham. So it was excellently suited to host one of ACT Culture Crossing events, which is full of creative people, artists, singers, poets, storytellers in one of the most inviting and welcoming venue such as Minor Oak Co-working - Nottingham’s resource for flexible work, located in the heart of Sneinton market.

ACT Intern Reporting for Cultures Crossing - 27.3.19

Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of attending my last ACT Cultures Crossing event as an intern. Hosted at Minor Oak Coworking in Sneinton Market, the venue provided yet another unique and enjoyable evening. After arriving and enjoying a selection of food and drink provided by our host Dee Miller. Marysia welcomed us all and introduced the first act Iryna Muha who performed a selection of Russian songs from her home country.

ACT Intern Reporting for Cultures Crossing - 27.3.19

The Cultures Crossing 7 evening on the 27th February held at the The Minor Oak in Sneinton Market brought energy to a modern work hub.

The evening started with Iryna Muha, a talented musician from the Ukraine, who played a traditional hurdy gurdy instrument. I found it interesting to listen to something different that I had never heard before that is part of the Ukrainian culture.

Who remembers Beestonian Kanchana Minson?

FROM FACEBOOK
Who remembers Beestonian, Kanchana Minson who worked at Voluntary Action Broxtowe Beeston? She now works at University of Nottingham as Project Officer at the School of Education, Jubilee Campus.

Well, we met up at Rudyards to celebrate Art Culture Tourism's first performance networking evening from 4th December 2013 at Anglo Scotian Mills featuring LACE!
It was she who found and introduced the wonderful Shalen Fu to me in 2013, a Journalism/Comms UoN/Ningbo student who designed my ACT logo, set up my first website and helped organise my performance networking evenings (5 month period).

Shalen went on to great things - returned to China to finish her degree, then went to LSE London to take her Masters (achieving Distinction), then returned to Beeston because she wanted to work here and did, working for Univ of Nottingham as Marketing/Events Assistant for 2 years, then back to London and onwards to China where she has gained an extended visa to now start on her PhD at Kings' College London KCL on China's cultural heritage.

Kanchana and I discussed ACT recruiting volunteers and university PhD students for business development and financial sustainability. She is a funding expert after oh so many years experience. She so misses the Beeston Community work at VAB but she has learnt so much about the University 'Community' and different funding techniques and training resources.
