It was another culturally diverse, eclectic evening on Wednesday 30th May at the colourful Lace Market shop, tearoom and creative space of Debbie Bryan’s.  I was delighted to be able to bring our Cultures Crossing events back into the city centre for its second time this year.

Entertaining us that night were Steve Benford, Celtic guitarist, Pam Miller Fine Artist (with paper pulp demonstration), Mike Payton storyteller, Manjit Sahota poet from Poets Against Racism group, and Vina Ladwa, Indian dancer from the Manushi Dance School.  Thank you ALL SO much!  You were all thrilling to watch and experience!

Debbie and her team are also celebrating their 10th anniversary at this site on June 20th - Congratulations to you all!!  Such a great vibrant venue!  Enjoy Inna Schutts wonderful photographs of the event!

Here are a few guest and performer comments we received about the night...

"What a wonderful evening!  Story telling, making pictures out of paper, guitar playing, poetry...Amazing!  Very cultural evening - think I will come again! " - Margaret Rodger

"Thank you for a great night!" - Clare

"A truly marvellous celebration of people and arts!  What a lovely experience to be part of and I look forward to visiting again in the future!"  - Chris Wilder, Trickster  @chriswildermagic

"Really enjoyed being part of CC9, demonstrating my paper pulp paintings!  Thank you so much Marysia and Caron for inviting me to take part, alongside so many talented performers - particularly Vina Ladwa, who during her interactive Indian Dancing, transported me to India!  Many, many thanks." - Pam Miller, Fine Artist

"Really enjoyed being part of this evening - warm, entertaining and great company!" - Mike Payton, Storyteller

"Was a pleasure to be here, an amazing evening!" - Rafe Ladwa

"It was wonderful to be able to play for you - and I loved learning to dance!" - Steve Benford

"What an enjoyable evening!  Got here a bit late really.  Enjoyed the poet, curious to know if he is publishing his work.  Loved the dancing, would like to get involved." - Quentin Hood "Veteran of the Folk Revival 60's"

On the evening of the 24th April, I attended my first ACT Cultures Crossing event hosted by Marysia Zipser at the Bennetts Bar Hotel and Restaurant in Long Eaton.

Being located at such a large venue, I was amazed at how beautifully set out it was - in such a way that made this grand hotel seem like a small, personal setting.

ACTive Reporting - Cultures Crossing arrives in Derbyshire

#ACTCC8 @Bennetts LongEaton.
On April 24 Cultures Crossing 8 came to Long Eaton in Derbyshire and brought colourful fireworks of artistic talent. Cozy and inviting Bennetts Hotel/Bar welcomed local and international performers from Beeston and Nottingham.

The evening was filled with music, stories, and exploration of world culture. From African rhythmic drumming and poetry to Cuban energetic dancing, from Bollywood violin vibrant tunes to Venetian technique inspired mask making, to Mexican folk story telling - all these incredible talents gathered under one roof to amaze the audience.

The first artist of the night was beautiful violinist Ursula Al-Mishari. She filled the room with sound of Bollywood - Middle Eastern inspired style music, which was so refreshing and quite different from what one would expect from ordinary violin performance!

Next was Stephen Jon, fascinating mask performer and mask maker. He not only entertained guests with his extraordinary characters but also shared different techniques and approaches to the time consuming and rather complicated process of mask making.

Two amazing ladies, Victoria Mponda (from Malawi) and Florette Fetgo (from Cameroon) brought a taste of African culture and mesmerised their audience with African drumming while reading poetry, two things I never thought could go so gracefully together!

When I thought that the evening could not get any more interesting, an amazing story teller Tim Ralphs came in front of the crowd to share a Mexican folk tale. His style and stage presence captivated everyone at once. Tim’s choice of the tale was fun and taught us an important lesson - wives are much smarter than husbands!!!

The last performance of the night was by Idalberto Alcada-Rodriguez, who danced from his heart and shared his love for Cuba by means of music and movement! He surprised everyone with his skilful machete performance integrated into graceful dance! In the end Idalberto gave a dance lesson which was not only for guests of the event, but even the Bennetts’ employees could not resist and got involved! People were fully enjoying themselves, dancing to the Cuban upbeat tune, some even got out of breath as the result.

The entire evening was a very successful cultural submersion full of electrifying performances!

ACT Intern Reporting for Cultures Crossing - 27.3.19

The Cultures Crossing 7 evening on the 27th February held at the The Minor Oak in Sneinton Market brought energy to a modern work hub.

The evening started with Iryna Muha, a talented musician from the Ukraine, who played a traditional hurdy gurdy instrument. I found it interesting to listen to something different that I had never heard before that is part of the Ukrainian culture.
